GENERAL INFORMATION:
What is it?
Methicillin (meth-uh-SILL-un) resistant Staphylococcus (staf-ih-loh-KOK-us) aureus (OR-e-us) is a bacteria (bak-TEER-e-uh) (germ) that causes bad infections. It is also called MRSA. MRSA is part of a growing number of bacteria that have mutated (changed) over the years. This bacteria cannot be killed by many different kinds of antibiotic (an-ti-bi-AH-tik) medicines. This bacteria can infect any part of your body. MRSA is a major health concern for caregivers. It is hard to treat, and it is very contagious (kun-TAY-jus) (easy to spread). MRSA used to be an infection you only got in the hospital. Now more people are getting MRSA outside of the hospital.
Many healthy people, including caregivers, have staph bacteria in or on their bodies and they do not know it. Staph bacteria is commonly found on the skin and in the nose. You may have MRSA and not know it. You may not be sick or have any signs or symptoms of infection. This is called colonization (kol-ih-nih-ZAY-shun). When you are colonized with MRSA, you can give it to other people and make them sick.
What causes it? MRSA is caused by bacteria that have mutated. They can no longer be killed by many antibiotics. It is also caused by caregivers giving you antibiotic medicine to treat an illness when you may not need an antibiotic. Many people do not follow their caregivers instructions when they take an antibiotic. Antibiotic medicine must be taken as ordered until the last one is gone, even if you feel better. By stopping your antibiotic before your caregiver tells you to, you allow bacteria to become resistant to that antibiotic. This is why many antibiotics cannot kill MRSA.

Who gets MRSA? Anyone can get MRSA, even if they have not been sick or in the hospital. You are at higher risk of getting MRSA if you:
Have been on a lot of antibiotics, or have not taken your antibiotics as instructed by your caregiver.
Have taken antibiotics for a viral illness. Illnesses caused by a virus include the common cold, the flu, and most sore throats. A virus is a type of germ that cannot be killed by antibiotics.
Have recently been in the hospital or had surgery.
Have been in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Have been in close contact with someone who has MRSA.
Live in a long term care facility or are an older (elderly) adult.
Are a dialysis (di-AL-ih-sis) or diabetic (di-uh-BEH-tik) patient.
Have any tubes going into your body
Have any hardware (metal implants) in your body. Hardware may include artificial (ar-tih-FISH-ull) (fake) joints, a pacemaker, or screws and plates to hold a bone in place.

How do I know if I have MRSA?
If your antibiotic is not getting rid of your infection, you may not be on the right antibiotic. Your caregiver may need to change your antibiotic. There is also a small chance that you may have MRSA. One of the ways you can get a MRSA infection is if you have a cut in your skin. This allows MRSA to get into your body.
The only way to know if you have MRSA is for your caregiver to do a culture. During this test your caregiver will collect drainage or tissue from your infected area. Your caregiver may also draw blood to see if MRSA is in your bloodstream. The results will tell your caregiver whether you have MRSA. Having a MRSA infection can cause:
Chest pain or heart palpitations (pal-pih-TAY-shuns) (when your heart skips beats). You may also have shortness of breath.
Red, warm skin around the infected area.
Fatigue (being very tired) or not having any energy.
Fever.
Nausea (upset stomach) or vomiting (throwing up).
Pain around the infected site.
Swelling or drainage at the infected site.

How do I keep from getting MRSA?
Your caregiver should not give you antibiotics for illnesses caused by a virus. You may feel that you need antibiotics in order to get well. This is not true. Antibiotics cannot treat or cure viral infections. By taking antibiotics for these conditions, bacteria are allowed to mutate. This may make them unable to be killed by the antibiotics we use now. If bacteria continue to mutate, there may be no antibiotics left to treat infections. Viral conditions usually will go away in time without the need for antibiotics.
If you do have a bacterial infection, and you are given antibiotics, take them as instructed by your caregiver. Keep taking them until the last one is gone, even if you feel better. By stopping your antibiotic before your caregiver tells you to, you allow bacteria to form resistance to that antibiotic.
Keep any cuts that you have clean and covered with a bandage until the cuts are healed. Follow your caregivers instructions for keeping your cut clean and covered.
It is important that you wash your hands very well. Wash your hands after you use the bathroom, before you touch food, and after you sneeze or cough. Always wash your hands when they are dirty. This will help prevent MRSA from being spread to others. Family and friends should also wash their hands often.
To wash your hands, you should use soap and warm water. Wet your hands under clean, running water. Make a good lather with the soap. Rub your hands back and forth and over each other, applying pressure when you do this. Do this for 15 to 20 seconds. Rinse off all the soap and dry your hands right away.
If you do not have clean, running water available, you may use a germ-killing hand cleaner. Apply some of the cleaner to the palm of one hand. Rub your hands together making sure you cover all areas of your hands. Do this until your hands are dry.

How is MRSA treated? Your caregiver will have you start taking the antibiotic that your MRSA responds best to. The culture test results will help your caregiver make this decision. You may need to be on one or more antibiotics for several weeks. You may also need to be in the hospital for many weeks until your infection is gone. Other things your caregiver may do to treat your MRSA infection include:
Fluid drainage. Draining fluid or pus that has collected in the area of a wound. This fluid makes your pain and infection worse. Your caregiver will numb the area and make a small incision (cut). Depending on how much fluid is in the infected area, your caregiver may decide to leave the area open. This allows for fluid to drain freely and for your caregiver to make sure the antibiotics are working. As your infection goes away, the open area will close and heal on its own.
Surgery. Depending on how bad your infection is, your caregiver may need to do surgery. If you have any hardware in your body, the hardware may be causing your infection. Your caregiver will decide if your hardware needs to be removed. Ask your caregiver if you have any questions or concerns about having surgery.
Contact precautions. As long as you are in the hospital with MRSA, you will be on special precautions called "contact precautions". This means that any caregiver entering your room will wear gloves, a gown, and a mask. This is to protect them from getting and spreading MRSA. You will be put into a private room. You may also be put into a room with another patient that has MRSA. While in a private room, you will be allowed to have visitors. Your visitors will need to wear gloves and gowns.
Other safety measures. MRSA may live on many objects. If someone touches these objects, they may get MRSA and give it to others. To decrease the risk to others of getting MRSA, caregivers may leave equipment in your room. This equipment may include a stethoscope, thermometer, blood pressure cuff, and tape. These items will not be used on anyone else.

How long will I be sick with MRSA? Depending on how bad your MRSA infection is, you may be sick for a very long time. You may need to be on one or more antibiotics for several weeks, even if you feel better. It is very important that your caregiver make sure the MRSA is completely gone before stopping your treatment.
How do I prevent spreading MRSA to others? It is very important that you wash your hands very well. Wash your hands after you use the bathroom, before you touch food, and after you cough or sneeze. Always wash your hands when they are dirty. Keep any cuts that you have clean and covered with a bandage until the cuts are healed. Follow your caregivers instructions for keeping your cut clean and covered. This will help prevent MRSA from being spread to others. Family and friends should also wash their hands often

Family Advocate Opposes Illinois' Plan for Mandatory Mental Health Screening

(AgapePress) - An Illinois pro-family activist is urging parents to find out what stage their state is at in implementing President Bush's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health -- and to strongly oppose the plan.
On June 30, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich received a final proposal from the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership. Two years ago, the state Legislature charged the Partnership with crafting a plan to reform Illinois' mental health system. The plan calls for the screening of all Illinois children ages zero to 18 and pregnant women for mental health problems.
However, privacy advocates like Karen Hayes with Concerned Women for America of Illinois feel local public schools should not be performing psychiatric evaluations of students without informed parental consent. Often, says Hayes, parents are not aware their children are being screened.
"There's a real high risk of misdiagnosis [by the schools]," Hayes cautions, adding her concern about a "very definite link" between the testing and some drug companies. "We found in other states that the drug companies were actually funding some of the task forces because there are all these psychotropic drugs on the market that are being promoted," she says -- and many of those drugs, her group points out, have only been approved for and tested on adults.
Hayes contends that with the president's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, the door has been opened for groups like "TeenScreen" -- a supposed suicide prevention program designed by pharmaceutical industry-backed officials at Columbia University. She explains:
"What can take place is that a note is sent home saying [the school is] going to be doing this screening," she says. "And if there is no objection that comes back after the children are handed a note to take home -- and you know most notes end up left in backpacks ... then the school believes that they have parental consent to go ahead with the screening." Concerned Women for America of Illinois has suggested to the state that it institute an "opt in" format for parents, instead of this passive "opt out" plan.
According to Hayes, the Illinois screening program is not about mental health, but rather government control of attitudes and beliefs. In her estimation, she says, the expansion of government in schools and daycares can be both intrusive and costly.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy is a fairly accomplished jurist, but he might want to get himself a good lawyer -- and perhaps a few more bodyguards.
Conservative leaders meeting in Washington yesterday for a discussion of "Remedies to Judicial Tyranny" decided that Kennedy, a Ronald Reagan appointee, should be impeached, or worse.
Phyllis Schlafly, doyenne of American conservatism, said Kennedy's opinion forbidding capital punishment for juveniles "is a good ground of impeachment." To cheers and applause from those gathered at a downtown Marriott for a conference on "Confronting the Judicial War on Faith," Schlafly said that Kennedy had not met the "good behavior" requirement for office and that "Congress ought to talk about impeachment."
Next, Michael P. Farris, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association, said Kennedy "should be the poster boy for impeachment" for citing international norms in his opinions. "If our congressmen and senators do not have the courage to impeach and remove from office Justice Kennedy, they ought to be impeached as well."
Not to be outdone, lawyer-author Edwin Vieira told the gathering that Kennedy should be impeached because his philosophy, evidenced in his opinion striking down an anti-sodomy statute, "upholds Marxist, Leninist, satanic principles drawn from foreign law."
Ominously, Vieira continued by saying his "bottom line" for dealing with the Supreme Court comes from Joseph Stalin. "He had a slogan, and it worked very well for him, whenever he ran into difficulty: 'no man, no problem,' " Vieira said.
The full Stalin quote, for those who don't recognize it, is "Death solves all problems: no man, no problem." Presumably, Vieira had in mind something less extreme than Stalin did and was not actually advocating violence. But then, these are scary times for the judiciary. An anti-judge furor may help confirm President Bush's judicial nominees, but it also has the potential to turn ugly.
A judge in Atlanta and the husband and mother of a judge in Chicago were murdered in recent weeks. After federal courts spurned a request from Congress to revisit the Terri Schiavo case, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) said that "the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior." Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) mused about how a perception that judges are making political decisions could lead people to "engage in violence."
"The people who have been speaking out on this, like Tom DeLay and Senator Cornyn, need to be backed up," Schlafly said to applause yesterday. One worker at the event wore a sticker declaring "Hooray for DeLay."

In an attempt to not be unduly harsh or partisan, in regards to Judge Greer’s handling of and rulings on the Terri Schiavo case, I took another look at Florida State law. As some individuals continue to assert that Judge Greer ‘followed the law to the letter’ and was strictly ‘constructionist’ and ‘conservative’ in his rulings, I thought I might have misinterpreted Florida law as it is written. If I’d made an error in my assessments of the case and in fairness to the honorable judge, it certainly warranted my additional review. I’ve made mistakes before and will, no doubt, make them again! Alas, it strongly appears that I was correct the first, second and third times.
Florida statutes regarding euthanasia (or as our friends to the left of center wish to call it ‘the right to die’) seem relatively clear. Florida statute 765.309: Mercy Killing of Euthanasia Not Authorized; Suicide Distinguished states: 1) “Nothing in this chapter shall be construed to condone, authorize, or approve mercy killing or euthanasia, or to permit any affirmative or deliberate act of omission to end the life other than to permit the natural process of dying”; 2) “The withholding or withdrawal of life-prolonging procedures from a patient in accordance with any provision of this chapter does not, for any purpose, constitute a suicide”. Note: I find the phrase “or to permit any affirmative or deliberate act of omission to end the life other than to permit the natural process of dying” of particular interest and salience. The omission, for Terri Schiavo, was food and water. Barely (or not at all in my opinion) arguable, is that ‘withholding food and water’ constitutes a ‘natural death’.
One of the arguments detractors and pro-euthanasia advocates present is that Terri Schiavo had ‘feeding and hydration tubes’ inserted in her body and those, alone, were ‘sustaining her life artificially’. I strongly disagree with that allegation and interpretation of “artificial”. But, for the moment, let’s assume it is true. Michael Schiavo and Judge Greer also ruled that no one was allowed to give Terri food or water orally. Had she been given sustenance in this “natural” way, Terri would not be dead, today. The evidence that Terri Schiavo was forced to die by the direction of the state is unequivocal. Also, let’s take a look at the phrase “the withholding or withdrawal of life-prolonging procedures from a patient in accordance with any provision of this chapter does not, for any purpose, constitute a suicide”. As we know, Terri’s death was not suicide. Rather, it was ‘death by the hands of another’; her estranged husband and the US court system. Florida law and statute 765.309 was, indeed, violated.
Florida statute 458.326 Intractable Pain; Authorized Treatment: “Nothing in this section shall be construed to condone, authorize, or approve mercy killing or euthanasia, and no treatment authorized by this section may be used for such purpose.” Again, this statute is clear in its refusal to accept, condone or allow euthanasia. Then, there is Florida statute 782.08 Assisting Self-Murder: “Every person deliberately assisting another in the commission of self-murder shall be guilty of manslaughter, a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s.775.082, s. 775.083 or s.775.084.” Seems fairly evident that this law was, also, broken. But, as judges are the ones who ‘interpret the laws’, in order to affect and impose their wills upon a gullible population, they have ‘interpreted’ the laws differently. Note: With the explicit language of Florida statutes, the only way (that seems even remotely plausible) they could have done so was to disregard said laws. Yet, another Florida statute that was deliberately violated? Certainly seems so.
An additional Florida statute, which seems to have been disregarded by the courts, is 744.3215 “Rights of persons determined incapacitated”. I’ve received myriad emails arguing that Terri Schiavo, in her condition, was neither guaranteed nor even allowed an attorney. Well, kids, that’s not what 744.3215 says. In fact, this statute states, amongst other rights afforded to the disabled, that “A person who has been determined to be incapacitated retains the right: (l) to counsel”. That counsel (IE legal counsel) would be in the form of a legal advocate. Terri was denied legal counsel. Another of the guaranteed rights in this Florida statute is (d) “to be treated humanely, with dignity and respect, and to be protected against abuse, neglect, and exploitation”. Suffice it to say, Terri Schiavo was not in any way “protected against abuse, neglect, and exploitation”; unless one considers her killing to actually have been her “protection”. Insanity! Euthanasia is not protection and is, most certainly, exhibiting “abuse, neglect and exploitation”. Murder is one of the most severe forms of abuse.
Then there are the specious declarations that those individuals who signed sworn affidavits, in favor of Terri Schiavo, were “not credible”. Really? Then, why in the world would they have affected them? What did they have to gain? The only thing that three nurses “gained” was to lose their jobs after agreeing to testify against Michael Schiavo. Hmmm. Doesn’t sound like they gained much…or anything. The problem is that whenever the pro-euthanasia/ culture of death folks are challenged, they become agitated and start shrieking one of their mainstay mantras “it’s unconstitutional!”; even when that which is being effected is constitutional. So, the next time one of the death-cultists “double-dog dares you” to provide proof of your arguments on the Schiavo case, just quote them chapter and verse of Florida state law. And, if that doesn’t shut them up, there’s always Amendment XIV to the US Constitution.

This is one of those "must reads" you hear about, and it just might be one of the most important reads about Terri Schiavo. From the personal testimony of Carla Sauer Iyer, a nurse who cared for Terri Schiavo, we have further proof of Terri's actual condition and the "cover-up" by George Greer, Michael Schiavo, George Felos, the Woodside Hospice, former Pinellas County Sheriff and now State Representative Edgar Rice, and the Pinellas County court.
- From BlogsForTerri and ProLifeBlogs Carla Sauer Iyer, a nurse who cared for Terri Schiavo from April 1995 to July 1996 at Palm Garden of Largo Convalescent Center was recently interviewed by David Allen. Although we’ve posted several articles in the past based on her affidavits [e.g., here], she revealed a few additional details in the interview that have not been widely reported.
“Just Michael [Terri's husband] trying to accelerate her death,” she said. Iyer explained that she would often sneak Terri’s parents, the Schindlers, into see her and that Michael refused to allow therapy of any kind. In fact, he was physically intimidating and would very loudly command the nurses “this is my order and you're going to follow it.”
“We were very intimidated … the whole place,” Iyer revealed, adding that some nurses had a restraining order against Michael Schiavo because his “behavior was so bad.”
When Terri had a urinary or upper respiratory tract infection Michael was visibly excited and would visit more often, asking “is she dead yet?” According to Iyer, at one point Michael exclaimed, “When is that b**** going to die?”
After Michael’s visits, Iyer stated that Terri, at times, became symptomatic for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Iyer said she found an unexplainable bottle of fast acting insulin concealed in Terri’s wastebasket that she speculates could have been used to induce the condition. She filed a police report but heard nothing further regarding the incident. Subsequently she received death threats she believes were related to notifying the authorities and was later released from her position as a caregiver because of her actions in support of Terri.
The nurses, including Iyer, interacted with Terri and daily witnessed her respond, laugh, and make requests. “We had her at the front of the nurse’s station… everyone loved Terri,” Iyer said.
When asked about the accuracy of the videos available on the internet Iyer said they were realistic but failed to capture Terri’s personality and, if anything, did not represent the extent of Terri’s ability to respond and communicate.
Iyer witnessed Terri consuming pudding and milkshakes every night and has previously testified that she fed Terri Jello. She witnessed Terri responding to her name, following others with her eyes and head and even moving her body with purpose.
In her prior affadavit, Iyer documented Terri's vocabulary:
Terri’s medical condition was systematically distorted and misrepresented. When I worked with her, she was alert and oriented. Terri spoke on a regular basis while in my presence, saying such things as "mommy," and "elp me." "Help me" was, in fact, one of her most frequent utterances. I heard her say it hundreds of times. Terri would try to say the word "pain" when she was in discomfort, but it came out more like "pay." She didn’t say the "n" sound very well. During her menses she would indicate her discomfort by saying "pay" and moving her arms toward her lower abdominal area. Other ways that she would indicate that she was in pain included pursing her lips, grimacing, thrashing in bed, curling her toes or moving her legs around. She would let you know when she had a bowel movement by flipping up the covers and pulling on her diaper.
Certainly this is a story that is not being carried by the mainstream press and has been supressed from judicial decisions. Iyer's testimony brings to light several facts including:
1. Terri Schiavo is not a "vegetable" and is not "brain dead". She recognizes and responds to others and makes attempts to verbally communicate. [more here]
2. Terri is not on life support but does receive food and water through a removable tube, which experts testify would not even be necessary if she were given therapy. This assisted feeding is a natural means of preserving life and not a medical act of life support or heroic measures.
3. Twelve medical experts and nurses who cared for her confirmed these facts. Video available through BlogsforTerri.com shows Terri responding and interacting with others. Health care workers have testified under oath [here and here] that she expresses herself using words, such as "mommy" and "help me".
4. Terri is a person with disabilities who thinks and expresses her moods and desires. She is loved by her family and responds to their visits with smiles and laughter.
5. Terri Schiavo may be the victim of ongoing negligence and injustice [more here]. She has been denied therapy and rehabilitation by her guardian since 1991. Florida’s guardianship laws REQUIRE that these necessary services be given to her.
6. Terri Schiavo deserves to have medical tests and therapy. She does not deserve to be starved and dehydrated to death.

You don't know her, but God does. She matters to God, she matters to me, and how she is treated should matter to you. She will never engage in stimulating conversation or ponder political debates. She will never read a book or write a paragraph. She will never marry or raise children or even earn her own keep. But she matters. My brother and I watched our parents care for her and somehow we learned an intuitive almost unspoken lesson. Her life is valuable, as valuable as that of her two brothers, both active in ministry. Whatever difference exists between her IQ and mine, imagine the gap between mine and God's! Yet he loved me and valued me so much that He would send the Jewel of Heaven to buy me back. He made me and redeemed me and that is the heart of our conviction about human life—everyone matters to God. Which brings us to Terri Schiavo. The facts of the case are well known and few have done as admirable a job of reporting them as has Florida Baptist Witness. It is a matter of record that the judge in the case, Judge George Greer, is an inactive member of Calvary Baptist Church, where I have pastored for five months. Though I have been Calvary's pastor for only a short time, I have loved this church for nearly 30 years, since I spent my teenage years growing in this community of faith. Some have wondered about the commitment of our church to the sanctity of human life. There is no need to wonder. Our convictions have been clear and consistent. In this cultural battleground our church arrived early, has fought hard and stayed faithful. For over 30 years, Calvary has sounded a clear trumpet about the sanctity of human life. Our beloved former pastor, Dr. Bill Anderson, was an early champion in the cause and his frequent prophetic appeals to oppose abortion and stand for life will never be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to have grown under his pastoral care. Our church was instrumental in the founding of the Bay Area Crisis Pregnancy Center that for over 20 years has served to help women in difficult circumstances choose life. Like many of you, we have tried to articulate and uphold an ethic of life consistent with a Christian worldview. We have tried to speak the truth in love to a culture bent on selfishness and hedonistic pursuits. Like our Florida Baptist family, and our larger Southern Baptist family, we have taken our stand for life. That stand, articulated in many ways – one of which is our enthusiastic support of this publication – has become one of the reasons that Judge Greer has disassociated himself from Calvary and has publicly criticized us in the St. Petersburg Times.Like evangelicals across the world, we are horrified at the thought that a handicapped woman could be, in effect, starved to death before a watching world. Like many pastors, I am not an expert in the law. I cannot debate the variances of custody rights, or even debate the medical analysis of a Persistent Vegetative State versus a Minimally Conscious State. But I know right from wrong. I know what God thinks about human life. I know there is only one way to describe the prospect of starving a woman to death because she cannot feed herself. It is wrong. Clearly this is a tortuous case. But it is precisely such moments when morality and truth must serve as our guide. Terri Schaivo is not on life support. She is not dying. Good evidence exists to suggest that she is responsive. All she receives is food and water, the same as you and me. Are we to conclude that she is less than human because she cannot feed herself? Can a month-old child feed himself? Is an elderly patient stricken with some debilitating disease and unable to feed herself suddenly less human? Do we now use an IQ test to determine if someone possesses the right to live? Isn’t that God's choice? Only God can give life, and only He should take it away.Tread carefully if you think this is simply about a dying woman being allowed to die peacefully. Remember when we were told that Roe v. Wade was simply about helping women who had been raped or whose lives were imminently threatened? Today few abortions fall into that category, but millions of human lives have been sacrificed upon the altar of selfishness. And the slide down the slippery slope continues.This case seems complex but it is as simple as four words: “Thou shalt not kill.” If you need a compass for this complex case, you'll find it there. As we all know, the Sixth Commandment means it is wrong to murder – to take the life of an innocent person without just cause. If I were the nurse in that hospice center and the directive were given to me to discontinue feeding a living human being and watch as he or she starved to death, I couldn’t do it. I’d rather get fired, resign, or do something else. This isn't about letting someone die; this is about causing someone's death. There is a huge difference.Her name is Terri. She can open her eyes. She watches a balloon as it crosses the room. She listens to music. She responds to her mother’s loving attention. She has something very precious, she has life; something only God can give. I became interested in the Terri Schiavo story some two years ago, and have followed the ups and downs in this tragic situation closely. After viewing video of Terri on television, I came to the belief that there was hope for her. As events have proceeded in the legal battle, it became clear to me that if something was not done for Terri, that all hope for her would be lost.
It was at this point that I decided to take action to try and bring a positive resolution to a very distressing situation. I therefore have made an offer to Terri’s husband in the amount of $1,000,000 to relinquish his custodial rights to Terri’s parents in an effort to keep the hope for Terri alive.
I believe very strongly that there are medical advances happening around the globe that very shortly could have a positive impact on Terri’s condition. I have seen miraculous recoveries occur through the use of stem cells in patients suffering a variety of conditions.

Crucial Hearings Today and TomorrowOn Wednesday, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) will go before Judge Greer regarding their motion for a stay on the removal of Terri's feeding tube pending their investigation of abuse charges against Michael Schiavo. Some have theorized that Judge Greer is legally bound to grant the stay, but what Greer will actually do is anyone's guess. This afternoon at 3:00, the Schindlers attorney David Gibbs will once again go before Judge Greer, this time to request that further testing be done on Terri to ascertain her real condition. The Schindlers, as well as a number of doctors, have long disputed Judge Greer's ruling that Terri is in a Persistent Vegetative State (PVS). To back up their request, the Schindlers have affidavits from a number of doctors and other professionals with expertise in diagnosing and treating brain injuries. The Terris Fight website reported last weekend that 17 doctors had come forward to support the call for new testing. However, the Schindlers attorneys inform me that they will have more like 29 affidavits to present to Judge Greer today, some of them from well-respected neurologists. As I mentioned in an earlier post, neurologists I have spoken to have all registered disbelief and dismay upon learning that Terri has never had MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans of her brain. Most neurolgists regard these tests as standard diagnostic tools for evaluating the extent of brain injuries. Reading through the doctors' affidavits on the Terri's Fight website, one finds that many of these doctors say the same thing: Terri should be given the MRI and PET scans. They also make mention of the Functional MRI and SPECT tests, which are capable of actually measuring and mapping the function of the brain. Will Judge Greer actually consider this evidence? Given his track record, one has little cause to be hopeful. But any reasonable person, seeing all of these doctors calling for the same thing, would be inclined to say: "Why not do these tests?" Justice Coalition will support family's side
Welcome news for Terri Schiavo from a well known victim rights group. As more and more is recognized about the abuse of Terri on the part of her guardian-husband Michael Schiavo, we are begining to see more cracks emerge in the armor of the George Greer/George Felos/Woodside Hospice death camp crowd of the Pinellas County court system in Florida - the death culture so supported by the St. Petersburg Times.- Florida Times UnionProclaiming Terry Schiavo a victim, Jacksonville's Justice Coalition scheduled a news conference for Monday at which it is expected to announce plans to get involved in her family's long-running legal effort to keep her husband from removing the feeding tube that keeps the Pinellas County woman alive.
"We believe Terri is a victim, and we are positioning ourselves to become involved in the case as victim advocates," said Ted Hires, founder of the influential victim rights group.
Hires plans to hold Monday's news conference on the steps of Jacksonville's federal courthouse.
Bobby Schindler, Schiavo's brother, said he plans to join Hires at the conference.
"We are very grateful for what Mr. Hires is doing," he said.
Schindler and his father traveled to Jacksonville this month to ask Hires for his help. They believe Schiavo might be a victim of domestic violence, abuse or neglect, and Hires agreed.

Judge Extends Stay in Right-To-Die Case

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A judge Wednesday extended a stay keeping brain-damaged Terri Schiavo alive until Friday, saying he needed time to decide whether her husband, who wants to remove her feeding tube, is unfit to be her guardian.
Pinellas Circuit Court Judge George Greer had issued the emergency stay Tuesday, after an appeals court let expire another stay that had been the last legal obstacle keeping Michael Schiavo from removing the feeding tube. Greer said he also needs more time to determine whether Terri Schiavo needs more medical tests.

Dear Constituent:
Thank you for your email. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me regarding this very important issue.
If Terri Schiavo's family chooses to continue the fight for their daughter's life, I hope they will explore all of their remaining legal options.
I believe if we are going to make a mistake in this situation we should err on the side of life. Therefore, if the Legislature can find a way to help Terri, we should pursue it aggressively. Unfortunately we have not yet identified an appropriate action, in addition to those we've already taken, that would be helpful.
What we do know is that this has been a painful tragedy for Terri and her family, and the Florida Legislature is currently working on legislation to ensure that no other family is subjected to the same confusion that the Schindlers have endured.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved and, of course, especially with Terri.

Schiavo is living with another woman with whom he has two children but refuses to give up guardianship of his wife, Terri, to in-laws Robert and Mary Schindler. Florida's 2nd District Court of Appeal issued a one-page mandate today dissolving its stay -- the last judicial block to removing the tube. Later, however, Pinellas-Pasco, Fla., Circuit Court Judge George Greer ordered an emergency stay until 5 p.m. tomorrow, ensuring the tube will remain in place until after a scheduled 2:45 p.m. hearing. At tomorrow's hearing, Greer with give attorneys for both sides his instructions regarding the appeals court mandate. The Schindlers plan to file a motion for another stay. More to come ... Terri Schiavo is a disabled woman who has been denied appropriate medical treatment and whose life has been threatened for the past fifteen years. Right now there is a massive effort in the Blogosphere to first save her life and then restore her rights to appropriate medical treatment. You can help in this effort. Here's how:

1. Educate yourself on her situation. A good comprehensive website to start with is her family's official website. You can find the latest breaking news on her case here. In addition, there are many other websites and blogs you can visit. See the Blogs for Terri roll below , and you can find your own sources with the help of your favorite search engine.

2. Get the word out. Email your family and friends, your local radio stations, newspapers, and anyone else you can think of.

3. Join the effort. If you have a blog, consider joining the blogburst and post about Terri on a daily basis. Contact the key people in Florida provided here. Shortly there will be an opportunity to participate in a pledge drive to raise funds to place a full page ad in the St. Petersburg Times. No doubt, there are other ways to get involved in the works.

The plan is to starve her to death by removing her tube and refusing to allow others feed her. This is supposed to allow her to "die with dignity." A woman in Prince William County, Virginia, just got jail time for starving her dogs. But our judicial system thinks starving is an appropriate end for Terri.
